Adam, Jen, and I went into the race without any real goals except just to run it and have fun. We were all doing great until about mile 4 when Jen got all awesome on us and decided to pretty much sprint the rest of the way. Adam and I tried to catch up to her for a while but then decided she was just going to fast. Then at about mile 7 Adam told me he was going to sprint up a hill. I told him, "Okay, I'll see you on the other side." Well, when I got to the top of the hill I saw Adam about half a mile away from me already. What?! I found out later that by the time he got to the bottom of the hill he decided to try to sprint the rest of the way to catch up with Jen. Why? Because he wanted to get a picture of her going through the finish line. Crazy boy! And guess what. He did it! He caught up with her (she was VERY far ahead of us) and got a picture of her going through the finish line. Adam and Jen are so awesome.
And then there's me. A little bit after I finished the hill where I lost Adam, I start to feel VERY hot. It's kind of hard to explain because I was definitely already hot (it was probably in the 90's already). But it was like my insides started to get really hot all of a sudden. And I started to feel light headed. I was freaking out a little bit because I thought I was having a heat stroke. So I stopped running and walked for almost a mile to the next fuel station where I then drank a LOT of water and poured a couple of cups over my head. I felt a lot better after that and ran the rest of the way in. It was really weird and kind of scary. I have never experienced something like that before.
So, the whole experience was good and I was very happy to be running it with Adam and Jen! Yay!
Here is the post from last year's Too Hot to Handle that we ran.
First of all, Melanie, YOU ARE AWESOME! I know how it feels to be completely overcome with heat and you feel like there's nothing left. But you kept going and finished!! Do you think y'all will do this one again next year? Or are you thinking of moving somewhere really cold? :)
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, great job Adam and Jen!!! Y'all are awesome, too! I can't run in 90 degree weather. Let alone SPRINT!
ReplyDeleteGo you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In this heat????! You deserve a day at the spa!
ReplyDeleteYike! That heat would be intense. Be careful out there!
