Endocrinologist

Zoe had a check up with her Endocrinologist. Her current stats are:

Height: 31.26" (was 29.84" at last check up in April)
Weight: 20 lb 8 oz (was 20lb 1oz at last check up in April)

So when Mike and I estimated, when she was a newborn, that she'd be about three years old before she'd be legal to sit in a forward facing car seat we were right! The weight limit is 21 lbs. She's almost there!

During the visit we had an x-ray taken of Zoe's hand and wrist to determine her bone age. We will do this once a year to see how Zoe's bones are progressing compared to her height and weight. The results of this year's x-ray showed that Zoe's fingers are at the level of a two year old and her wrist is at the level of an almost one year old. Surprised? We're not. Zoe weighs as much as a one year old and is as tall as an 18 month old.

I also had the doctor do some calculations to determine, based on how tall Mike and I are and the rate Zoe is growing right now, how tall Zoe might be by the time she's finished growing. It's a very rough estimate, but the doctor came up with a height of 4'10". That's barely tall enough to reach public sinks and toilets and to reach the gas pedal in a car.

So, with all this information in hand, the doctor told me she's ready to start Growth Hormone Therapy if, and whenever, we're ready. She's not in a rush to get started on it. Neither are we, who wants to give their child a daily injection?!?! But I think we are realizing more and more that it's going to be necessary.

We wanted to take Zoe to the specialist in New York over the summer but that fell through so instead we're going to take Zoe to another local Endocrinologist in October for a second opinion. Then we'll be ready to make a decicion.

I'll keep you updated on this stuff!

  2. Hey Mel, what a tough decision. Either way, let's hope high heels and platforms are in style when she grows up. :) (Unless of course she marries someone short--like I did.)

  5. Is she really still sitting backwards? I can't believe she's okay with that! What a trooper!

What a tough situation you guys I have. I don't envy you. Of course you know that she'll be totally fine no matter how tall she grows up to be!

  6. Hey, I just remembered. Kristin Chenoweth is 4'11''. Maybe Zoe can star on Broadway. I would totally support that... :)
